Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka packs an extraordinary amount into one small island. Tea-covered mountains tumble towards tropical coastlines, ancient cities disappear into jungle, elephants wander through national parks and trains curl slowly through the highlands. Add centuries-old temples, colonial architecture and a deeply rooted food culture, and a journey of just a few hours can feel like arriving somewhere entirely new.

The island's character shifts as quickly as its landscape. Galle's old fort holds tiled roofs and quiet courtyards behind its sea walls; Kandy revolves around the sacred Temple of the Tooth; further north, the cultural triangle reveals rock fortresses, cave temples and the remains of ancient kingdoms. Along the south coast, fishing villages now mingle with surf towns, small hotels and cafés tucked among coconut palms.

But some of Sri Lanka's loveliest moments are less monumental: a roadside hopper eaten warm from the pan, king coconuts piled beside the road, laundry fluttering from a train window, or the sudden appearance of an elephant at the edge of the trees. It's an island that invites you to look closely.

Ancient cities, tea-covered hills and wild coastlines, all within a few hours of one another.

Purpose Image

Sri Lanka is remarkably easy to explore, but it's worth travelling slowly. Distances on the map can be deceptive, and winding roads and leisurely train journeys are part of the experience. The classic route connects the ancient cities of the Cultural Triangle with Kandy and the tea country before descending towards the wildlife parks and beaches of the south.

For families, there is plenty of adventure without needing to manufacture it. Look for elephants on safari, climb ancient rock fortresses, ride the train through the highlands, learn to surf, explore ruined cities by bicycle or simply watch monkeys negotiate the rooftops. Boutique hotels and restored heritage properties make it easy to build in slower days between bigger adventures.

Sri Lanka's scale is perhaps its greatest luxury. Within one trip you can move between Buddhist temples, working tea estates, rainforest, colonial towns and warm Indian Ocean beaches without spending days in transit. Leave some space in the itinerary. This is a country particularly good at tempting you to stay a little longer.
