Maldives

The Maldives is a country scattered across the Indian Ocean that has become the hallmark of the ideal holiday. Here, more than a thousand coral islands gathered into 26 natural atolls, where sandbars disappear with the tide and almost impossibly blue water stretches to the horizon. It is every bit as beautiful as the photographs suggest, but there is more here than overwater villas and honeymoon seclusion.

Beyond the resorts, the Maldives has its own distinct island culture, shaped by the sea, Islam and centuries of movement across the Indian Ocean. Fishing boats return with tuna, mosques rise between coconut palms and tightly packed island communities live just metres from the reef. In Malé, markets, motorbikes and colourful buildings reveal a very different side of the country from the barefoot quiet of the outer atolls.

The ocean, though, is always the main event. Coral gardens begin just offshore, manta rays gather in clear lagoons and whale sharks cruise warm tropical waters. Whether you're sleeping in a thatched villa or a simple guesthouse on a local island, life here quickly falls into the rhythm of swims, boats, sunsets and the changing tide.

A thousand tiny islands, scattered like perfectly polished stepping stones across the Indian Ocean.

Purpose Image

The Maldives can be as indulgent or as down-to-earth as you make it. Private-island resorts offer the version most people know: beautiful villas, extraordinary pools, house reefs and days designed around doing very little. Local islands offer something different, with family-run guesthouses, neighbourhood cafés, fishing boats and a closer glimpse of everyday Maldivian life, often at a fraction of the price.

For families, the simplicity is part of the appeal. Days revolve around swimming, snorkelling, paddleboards, dolphins, boat trips and barefoot stretches of sand. Choose an island with an accessible house reef and even a morning swim can become a wildlife encounter, with reef fish, turtles and rays moving through the shallows.

Where you stay matters enormously. Each island is its own tiny world, and transfers between them can involve speedboats, domestic flights or seaplanes. Rather than trying to move around too much, choose carefully and settle in. The Maldives is at its best when there is nowhere else you need to be.
